JUST ASK:

We all know that talking about suicide is an uncomfortable topic. No one wants to bring it up or talk about it. When it comes to saving someone who might be contemplating suicide, or who is at risk, we need to break out of our comfort zone and ask what needs to be asked. If you even have the slightest thought that your Veteran is thinking about suicide, come right out and ask them, it just might save their life. It might not be easy, and well, let’s be honest, you might not like the answer. Being upfront and asking directly may put things in perspective for the Veteran. Hearing it out loud can bring it to their attention that this is real, and just might start the process of them getting help. Also, let them know how much they mean to you and that you are there for them. Just think, if they’re not thinking about suicide, what have you lost? What have you gained if they are?
